THE COMIC HERO'S
JOURNEY
Workshop by Steve Kaplan
June 20-21 | Kyiv, Ukraine
Just like any other hero, a comic hero also sets out on a journey. Unfortunately, unlike a real hero who chooses to go for an adventure, a comic one often doesn't have a choice!

During the workshop Steve will tell about the start of a comic hero's journey, who they meet along the way and what relationships they form as a result, especially with the antagonist – everything you need to know to create an original, multi-faceted and plausible comic hero.
The main perk of the two-day workshop in Kyiv is practice. Each participant will receive a practical task and a chance to hear feedback from Steve Kaplan, the man who is a consultant to HBO, DreamWorks and Disney.

However, Steve is also meticulous about theory: he provides a wealth of examples from famous comedies and scripts, explaining what works and what doesn't.
What Steve will talk about?
NORMAL WORLD
  • Protagonist's normal state is flawed
  • Initial goal — short sighted
  • How to plant the seeds, to be developed in the narrative
  • Theme implied or hinted at
COMIC PREMISE
  • The lie that tells the truth.
  • A tool used to excite and engage the imagination.
  • An impossible or improbable situation that COULD NEVER HAPPEN
  • . . . but since it does happen, poses the question, "What happens next?"
WTF* (*Stands for "What the F***!!)
  • Invitation
  • Comic Premise
  • Character needs propel narrative
  • Characters determine events and structure
RE-ACTION
  • Steps taken to return to normal world
  • Complications and reversals come from within
  • Dealing with problem, but without growth or truth
CONNECTIONS
  • Unexpected allies and enemies
  • Emotional connections
  • Shedding facades – truth telling
  • Pace slows
NEW DIRECTIONS
  • Outer goal has changed
  • Discovered goal
  • Inner goals
  • Inadvertent and inconsistent adoption of positive character attributes
DISCONNECTIONS
  • Lowest points — success is at its least likely stage
  • Relationships come apart
  • Mask is put back on
RACE TO THE FINISH
  • Realization of and re-commitment to revised goals
  • Personal growth accidental, inadvertent or un-heroic
  • Success/failure = hair's breadth
  • Promise of a better world
Detailed program and schedule of each day will be announced soon
Steve Kaplan
He is an international expert in comedy projects script development and production. Steve's "graduates" are people who went on to create such all-time favorites as Friends, Ugly Betty, Venus in Fur, Sex and the City, The Big Bang Theory, and others. As for Steve, he is a modest author of two intensive courses on comedy and two books based on those. Besides, he teaches in two Ivy League schools, UCLA and Yale.

Impressive, huh? But Steve's most important qualities, no doubt, are his openness and a great sense of humour.
Come and learn how to send your hero for an exciting journey
